:: Puno - Chullpas of Sillustani - Uros (Floating Islands)

We arrived in Puno after midnight and booked ourselves into Incawasi Hostel. We liked the one in Cuzco very much, but this was a real shithole ! My bed was full of glass, there was hair on the matrass under the bedsheets and it stank like rotting fish !

Chullpas of Sillustani
We actually came to Puno to visit the northern parts of Lake Titicaca, the highest geographical lake in the world. The first day we've gone on a trip to see the Chullpas of Sillustani. It was nice, but nothing special. It were buriel places from a tradition time of one culture into the other. The lattern being the Incas. What the guide also showed was this magnetic rock. Appearantly the Incas where really familiar with it ...

That day we got amazingly got with our story of being Zimbabweans. We made this story up to avoid locals who always asked where you're from. By replying you're from Zimbabwe, they were surprised and that very second gave you the change to escape. Well, this time we were in our tourbus with around 20 other people. What a coincedence that there's this Zimbabwean couple and this guy who worked theire for a few years. They kept asking questions. We did not even know what the bloody capital was ! A good reason why afterwards we had done some research about the country on the net ...

Uros (Floating Islands) - Isla Taquile
The 2nd day we took a boattrip. First stop was the Floating Islands (Uros). Amazing : Everything is reed, the surface of the islands, the houses, the watchtower, food like soup, the boats and ofcourse the souvenirs. When the islands is about to get drowned they just throw lots of more reed on the surface as it grows in lots and lots of them ... Very interesting and cool.

Another little interesting thing is that these boats have the same contstruction as the ones who were used by ancient Egypts for crossing the river Nile. Mmm ...

After that we spent some time on Isla Taquile, not to confuse with tequila. It was nice as well, with some nice views of the lake and coming in contact with the local traditions and culture.

After a last diner and beer in Puno that night we were saying goodbye to Peru. Actually for Antony, Johan and Raaf, because I was suppose to fly back home from Lima. But it was also a goodbye for me from Puno as I did not plan to come back at this city ...
