:: Colca Canyon

Today we were off to the Colca Canyon. Appearantly the deepest canyon in the world and the place to see the biggest birds in the world : El Condor

The ride itself was not to bad for five hours through a very remote area. You you're not surprised to find me surprised when soemwhere in the (really) middle of nowhere there was this guy stepping out. ?... Yeah, a big question mark. Then there was also this couple coming in out of the blue ...

After five hours we finally arrived in Chivay. As was getting quite usual, we had our first hostel proposals while still stepping out. This time we had one for 5 sol, not even 2 euros and the beds were amazing. Actually a lot better than mine at the moment.

With no disrespect to the native people. Not at all actually, but we made it a sport and a principal thing to get a sleepingplace for no more than 10 sol. We were in low season and prices were lovwer than the 15 sol thay ask in highseason...

The next morning we took the bus to Cruz Del Condor. Thé place to see some condors. Fortunately we have seen some. They're were quite a few tourists, while on this 17 day tour or whatever, who came specially here to see these birds , who actually missed out on them.

After that we went down to our campsite. With down, I really mean down. We had to do a decent of aorund 1200 meters à oied (by walking). If I say that I prefer walking uphill instead of downhill and with this enrmous heat, would you believe me if I say it was quite hard?... But we had a great refreshing dive in the pool. Along with a beer and nothing else please ...

That night I got this eerie feeling. Sometimes who are at a place and you are overwhelmed by the power of nature. Like you're in a big energyfield. I remember I had this once before in New Zealand at Fjordland. Also a very remote place with little influence by mankind.

The next morning Raaf and me went out for a walk around the canyon. It was beautifull, we walked on little roads, just on the side of the mountain slopes. The views were magnificent ! Very big depths.

We crossed these little villages where people must get a such cultural shocks by visiting a city like New York for exemple. There was even this village which even the Spaniards had never reached. It was here that I met this little kid Paul. I asked his mother if he was named after Paul McCartney. She doesn't even know who he is. Never even heard of the beatles. Let me say that I read a couple of months before that Paul McCartney is know by 9 out of 10 people in the world. Well ...

It was also in this Colca Canyon where I thought about the idea to come back here afterwards and help this people in their development. I don't know, but I think we Western people can help these people with our knowledge, but without touching their traditions and culture. The Inca culture has already been hit quite hard and we on our part can learn a lot from them. I really think that children over there grow up must faster than we do for exemple. It was also nice to see the people dressed in the colourfull Inca-kind of outfits.

One last thing. If you have to go for a pee, how long can you hold it up?... ... And if you're in a busride and you just start off and you it takes about 5 hours and the road is quite wobbly?... ... Well, well done Johan, I'm still impressed ...
